Tasmanian Communities Online (TCO) is a community-focussed network of public computing facilities providing equitable supported access to online services, information and lifelong learning in accordance with State Government strategic directions and local needs.
The program's goals will guide business activities directed toward achieving the Mission. The goals are:
- Provide equitable and supported access to computers and the Internet.
- Facilitate local access to IT-enabled education and training opportunities that enhance lifelong learning.
- Promote and support access to government, business and other online services.
- Contribute to local initiatives that strengthen community capacity.
- Maintain and promote TCO as a cohesive and responsive network operating under a common set of standards, policies and procedures
The building of an online community network
The Tasmanian Communities Online project has involved building a wizard driven framework for automatic template driven website deliveries to 64 different Online Access centres across Tasmania.
The system provides an administrative super-user account which allows allocation of new site accounts. Online Access Centre administrators can log into the system to create or administer their site. The system allows selection of a base colour for the site, the submission of location specific images and a centre name. The system selects pre-built templates and also generates graphical material to complete the site framework. Site administrators are then guided through a customised (project specific) version of the autopublish interface to achieve content entry.
The TCO network of sites also integrate with other community and commercial web sites and systems to gather relevant information such as community event material, house prices, and news.
